Elbow Xray - AP Oblique Projection – Lateral rotation

Image receptor 8 X 10 inch for single exposure and 24 X 30 cm divided

Patient Position

Let patient seat at the end of radiographic table with the arm extended and in contact with the table.

Part Position

  • Extend the patient’s arm in position for an AP projection and center the mid point of the image receptor to the elbow joint.
  • Rotate the hand laterally or externally to place the posterior surface of the elbow at a 45 degree angle. When proper lateral rotation is achieved, the patient’s first and second digits should touch the table.
  • Shield gonads.

The image shows an oblique projection of the elbow with the radial head and neck projected free of superimposition of the ulna.

Evaluation Criteria

The following should be clearly demonstrated:
  • Radial head, neck, and tuberosity projected free of the ulna
  • Open elbow joint
  • Soft tissue and bony trabeculation
